Is Porsche now an SUV company that sells sports cars?

At what point do the stockholders demand that they give up on their “silly small-margin models for old-school zealots” (like us)?

The brand identity fostered by the smaller population is what rubs off on the SUVs and helps make them desirable. You need one to have the other, at least for the foreseeable future.

By sales and profit - yes.

By reputation and identity - no.

Chevrolet is not “A maker of SUVs that also dabbles in V8s” in terms of reputation. You say chevrolet and for most people the corvette, camaro, and silverado come to mind. They sell way more pickups, SUVs, and sedans than corvettes and camaros, but they make up a major part of the brand heritage and identity.

Its to fund their sports cars, their identity. Think of other supercar companies that don’t do this, they have tons of financial problems and jump from owner to owner. I think every company needs a mainstream SUV to fund their Niche cars

If you ask me Porsche is smarter than any other sports car/supercar company. They have two SUVs to rake in tons of extra profit. Extra money they can use to come out with more badass cars like the 918 spyder, Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3 RS without any risk of financial issues.

Of course they sell more SUVs than they do sports cars. The world buys more SUVs than sports cars. But that doesn’t mean they’re giving up on the 911 anytime soon.

But then, everyone has already heard my ranting .

Porsche is an apparel maker that also sells automobiles.

^This.

More profit from SUVs means more funding for amazing sports cars.

It’s a brilliant strategy on their part. I did the math and SUV sales were 63% of their profit last month and without those SUVs they would have sold 1,907 cars rather than 5,217.

I think the OP was referring to the stockholders saying, “why even waste time/money on the cars that only make a small profit?” Which right now, is not really a concern, but if they were starting to lose money it totally would be.

Maybe a price drop would help?

Now that I think of it that comment doesn’t work.

Was supposed to be a joke but I can’t even

I know what he was referring to. I was just explaining that with the two SUVs they won’t have to worry about money/stockholders because their wallets will be plenty full. As long as Porsche has SUVs they’ll be in the clear because I don’t see that the whole crossover trend going away anytime soon.

Yeah I doubt the SUV craze will end anytime soon but that doesn’t mean Porsche will remain near the top of the SUV market.

But the price drop would just mean MOOOOAAAAAR options

And you know how much we love Porsche options

They’re by no means at the top but they do sell enough of them. Besides, the Macan is flying out the door right now.

Porsche sells SUVs because people see them as a status symbol (and to a lesser extent, because they are really good SUVs)

If Porsche stops making the 911, they’ll no longer have that same reputation as a maker of high-end cars for rich people, and they’ll lose a lot of that cachet.

The thing is, those SUV’s come from the mind of sports car engineers. This is why I love them.

So you hang your Ferrari-branded hat and jacket on your Ferrari-branded coat rack that sits on your Ferrari-branded tile floor?

Keep in mind that you’ll only be allowed to purchase the LaFerrari Wife Speciale if you’ve purchased the three earlier models, and she can not be loaned out to others for “instrumented testing” unless you have no desire to ever purchase any future Ferrari Wives.
